Gibson Lifestyle - Features &bull Yesterday
By 1972, the goodwill and communal harmony of festival love-ins like Monterey Pop and Woodstock had begun to wear off. Craft, Creativity, & Customization [Columns]
Ultimate-Guitar.Com &bull Aug 26, 2010
Creating music is a wonderfully satisfying experience that not only can be appreciated and performed by the Composer, but by the listener as well. In this article, Im going to share with you 3 essential and very effective concepts for making music that I teach and help execute with my current students. This could be considered the grunt work. Learning your Music Theory, Counterpoint, Ear-Training, Arranging, Orchestrating, etc. However, just learning something isnt good enough if you want to be able to accurately express everything you want in music. You have to practically apply everything you learn so that it… Full Story »

Imitation Study Number 2 in A Minor
A Monk's Musical Musings &bull Aug 4, 2010
Believe it or not, I've completed five of them so far, and the previous one was "perfected" by simply changing the dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm of the episodes to quarter/eighth triplets. This works better because the triplet feel comes right out of the tail of the subject. Since that was such a minor change, I decided to move on to the next in the series. With this piece, however, the dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm is in the subject, while the written-out trill is in the countersubject: Therefore the episodes sound more natural… Full Story »

Rock Stars. Part Twenty Two [Columns]
Ultimate-Guitar.Com &bull Aug 3, 2010
Click was not a daring man - he never had been. Making fast decisions, considering options as they came to him and making his intentions clear were things that he had particular weaknesses with. Being impulsive was also a certain talent that he did not have. It was the same with the concept of logic or an organised mind; they just didn't quite work with him as they should. These obvious faults, which he lamented over often, were ones that were fairly clear when sober. When Click was drunk, everything became much worse. Intelligence itself moved swiftly out of the… Full Story »

Gibson Les Paul in Perfect Harmony
guitarshortcuts.com via @guitarshortcuts &bull Jul 29, 2010Guitar legend Les Paul bought the solid body electric guitar to the music world and re shaped the essence of rock and roll. The pioneering recording techniques like studio multi tracking and the electronic echo also came from this acclaimed musician. It was in 1934 that Les Paul constructed his 1st guitar pick up and in 1941 he had created the prototype for the solid body electric guitar. Made from a 4 wood board with strings, pickup and plug, Paul christened it the "Log". It also incorporated a section of a railroad tie as the base and was designed with… Full Story »

Invention in A Minor v4.5
A Monk's Musical Musings &bull Jul 20, 2010
At first I thought I was working on a two-voice fugue with this subject, then it became an invention, and now it's actually almost a piece of music. Previously I had the various statements and stretti linked only by lineal licks, but now I've put some real episodes into it. The exposition hasn't changed any, but beginning in measure seven there is an episode that modulates to the subdominant minor region. This is actually a harmonized version of… Full Story »
